Tommy Gemmell has told Setanta Sports that he is pleased with Celtic’s appointment of Tony Mowbray, but has warned him he must strike a balance between success and pretty football.
The former Hibernian and West Bromwich Albion manager is renowned for the attractive play of his sides and Gemmell is all in favour of that, but admits the pressure is on to win the SPL title.
“It’s been a long time in coming because they’ve been searching about since Gordon Strachan left and I think Tony Mowbray was the favourite and he was certainly a favourite player when he was at Celtic,” Gemmell told Setanta Sports News.
“When he went to manage Hibernian he was very popular there and although West Brom were relegated he played a lot of very good football and that’s what Celtic supporters are looking for, they want to see good football.”
The Celtic legend added: “He’ll know he’s got a lot to follow, Gordon Strachan won three championships in succession so he has a lot to live up to and I think he has got to improve the squad to do that.
“I think he’s more adventurous than Gordon Strachan. At West Brom he had a nice flowing style of play which Celtic supporters like to see.
“They like to see attacking play and if he can do that at Celtic Park then he will become a popular manager, but at the same time he must get success.”
