Exclusive: Mowbray must find McDonald a partner

by Ben Blackmore , 16 June 2009

John Hartson told Setanta Sports News that Tony Mowbray’s first job at Celtic must be to sign a new striker.

Hartson hailed the appointment of the former West Brom boss at Celtic Park, insisting he will bring the free-flowing football back to the green side of Glasgow.

However, there is one pressing concern for Hartson – who played for Celtic and West Brom, and it concerns the futures of Georgios Samaras and Jan Venegoor of Hesselink.

“Tony will have a good squad to work from, Gordon Strachan has put down fantastic foundations for him,” Hartson told Setanta Sports News.

“There’s Gary Caldwell and Scott Brown, plus he’s got a great striker in Scott McDonald.

“McDonald will need somebody to play alongside him because Samaras and Venegoor of Hesselink, although good players, perhaps are not the individuals to help Celtic challenge Rangers.

“Mowbray will want to bring in two or three players of his own, maybe from West Brom, but he’ll mix his own scouting system with Celtic’s to make sure he starts the season with the right squad.”
