Hay tips Mowbray to succeed

by Gordon Pope , 16 June 2009

Former Celtic manager Davie Hay has told Setanta Sports News that Tony Mowbray will be an excellent manager at Parkhead.

Mowbray arrived in Glasgow on Tuesday after weeks of speculation and Hay believes he will handle the pressure of needing to win the SPL championship at his first attempt.

“I think it will prove to be first-class appointment of Tony Mowbray with [assistant manager] Mark Venus and [first team coach] Peter Grant and I’m sure his first target will be to win the title back from Rangers,” he told Setanta Sports News.

“I think initially to recapture the league title is the priority and I think big Tony is noted particularly for his team with Hibernian when Celtic fans saw him trying to play an attractive style of football, and I’m sure the Celtic fans will be looking for that as well.

“But, in due course, he will be looking for European success as well.”

He added: “Tony has got a name for the sort of style his teams play, but to be fair to Gordon Strachan, he was highly successful and you don’t get much better than three titles out of four and Rangers pipped them on the last day of the season.

“But I think no matter the different style of management or not, you have to be successful as Celtic manager and Tony knows, having played there, what is required.”
