Martinez planning Spanish raid

by Toby Davis , 18 June 2009

Roberto Martinez is planning to return to his native Spain to unearth some hidden gems in a bid to bolster Wigan.

Martinez was installed in The Latics hotseat this week and is now eager to get to work on strengthening the squad.

The former Swansea manager says Spain offers a fertile market for picking up bargains and is now determined to hit the ground running at the DW Stadium.

“The Spanish market is a fantastic one for us,” he said. “But we have to be quick and we have to be creative.

“We need to spread our network and make sure we bring the players we need for a really competitive dressing room.”

And the new Wigan manager is planning to follow the blueprint of Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola.

Martinez admits to being a huge fan of the Catalan club, who claimed the La Liga title and the Champions League in Guardiola’s first season in charge.

"Barcelona is probably the closest football club to my hometown [of Balaguer in Catalonia]. I always follow that club," added Martínez.

"I've met Pep a couple of times, he's a very impressive man, he knows exactly what he wants and he's worked extremely hard for it. He's a great example not only for me but also for many chairmen to take the harder decisions.

“Guardiola has been a great example for any young manager in European football. If you work hard enough and are determined enough you can cover the lack of experience."
