Redknapp demands characters

by Toby Davis , 11 January 2009

Harry Redknapp says Tottenham must forget flair and develop a backbone if they are to get out of their relegation battle.

Spurs are back in the drop zone after their last-gasp 1-0 defeat to Wigan at the JJB Stadium and without a win in their last five Premier League games.

After enjoying an initial resurgence following Redknapp’s appointment, the club are back in trouble and the manager insists he needs characters not show-ponies.

"If you look at the results of Tottenham over the last year you have to be concerned," he said.

"Look back to the end of last season after the Carling Cup and see how many points they have got.

"They had two points from eight games when I came here. How do you get two points from eight games?

"They (the players) put the club in it, it is up to them to get us out of it.

"It looks like a certain kind of player right through [the squad]. There is plenty of flair.

"But we are in a relegation scrap and we need some men and some characters to get us out of it, that is what you are looking for when you are in the position we are in.

"We've got some but not enough. You'd put your life on Jonathan Woodgate, Michael Dawson, Didier Zokora, Jamie O'Hara."

Redknapp was also disappointed with the manner in which his side conceded an injury-time winner to Wigan’s Maynor Figueroa.

"It was a poor header by the left back to concede the corner and then we didn't defend the corner," he added.

"It looked a banker draw. I don't remember our keeper having to pull off many world-class saves today."

Recent signing Jermain Defoe was subdued in what was a frustrating afternoon for the striker, but Redknapp refused to criticise his new recruit.

But the Spurs manager hinted he may be on the look-out for a new partner for Defoe after Roman Pavlyuchenko was hauled off only eight minutes into the second half.

He added: "We didn't see a great deal of him (Defoe). He needs someone up there with him who is going to get hold of the ball.”
