Barry not having a hernia over injury

by Tom Kell , 12 January 2009

‘One game at a time’ is Gareth Barry’s approach to the groin injury which he has been carrying for much of the season.

Having been unable to take part in last weekend’s FA Cup tie with Gillingham, Barry was deemed fit enough to resume his place for Villa’s derby day with West Brom on Saturday.

However, it seems that even if no long-term absence is on the horizon any time soon, it is not a problem which Barry has totally seen the back of.

"It is a bit of a niggle and we felt it would be best to leave me out of the Gillingham game,” he said.

"We had scans to see if it was an hernia problem - and whether I would need an operation - but they were all clear.

"The groin felt a lot easier against West Brom and we will judge it game by game.

"I felt it very strongly against Hull but it has been there all season really. We will judge it day by day and game by game. No operation is imminent."

The renaissance man of England’s midfield also reiterated his intention to see out the season at Villa Park having come within a whisker of joining Liverpool in the summer.

"My feelings are still the same,” he added. “I want to be here this season, see it through, and just want to end all speculation on my behalf.

"Nothing is being talked about regarding a new contract at the moment."
