O'Neill happy to spend big

by Alex Livie , 12 January 2009

Aston Villa boss Martin O’Neill says no new faces are in the pipeline, but has admitted he would be prepared to pay over the odds for a high-class player.

Villa are still firmly in the title picture, although O’Neill has played down the prospect of his side remaining in the hunt.

The Ulsterman feels he needs to add to his squad in a bid to keep their challenge on track, but admits January is a difficult time to make waves in the market.

”We are not very close at this moment,” O’Neill said on Setanta Sports News. “We are looking, we will see if we can add to it, but it is getting back to the point that getting quality at this particular stage is difficult.

“I have said I don’t mind paying over the odds if you get value for it in the long term, like Ashley Young two years ago, but it is a difficult market.”
