Luiz Felipe Scolari is adamant that Joe Cole will not be leaving Chelsea in the January transfer window, despite reports linking the England international with a shock move to Tottenham Hotspur.
It is reported that Cole is distinctly unimpressed with Scolari’s tendency to substitute him at present and appeared frustrated when being removed once more in the FA Cup draw against Southend.
And while he is one of his generation’s most talented English players, the midfielder is reportedly yet to hear from the club regarding a contract extension with his current deal set to expire in 18 months time.
Tottenham have been linked with the former West Ham prodigy but Scolari is unwilling to allow the 27-year-old to leave Stamford Bridge, either in January or in the future.
When asked if Cole would stay at the club for the long-term, Scolari replied: "Yes, he will.
"He is a fantastic player and important for the club and for me. He scores many goals and his future is here.”
The speculation regarding Cole’s future comes at an unfortunate time as Chelsea prepare to face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Blues lead United by four points having played two games more than their rivals but Chelsea are strengthened by the return of John Terry from suspension and, with the London club struggling for form at home, Scolari appears in a positive mood ahead of the trip to Manchester.
"It is important for us that John is back because he is our captain and a man who has a good position on the pitch," said Scolari.
"He is a leader and plays very well every game. I think on Sunday the opposing players will respect him as well. I have five central defenders in very good condition and this is very good for me
"I have lost many games with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge but we have done well away from home. Sometimes when you play at home it is more difficult than playing away.
"Maybe now it is more difficult at Stamford Bridge than away from home.
"It is an important game, different game. It is not a 'derby' but it is an exciting game for the players, for me, for the people and for the world."
