Hide closes in on title shot

by Mark Doyle , 12 January 2009

Former heavyweight champion Herbie Hide has secured a WBC cruiserweight title eliminator against Matt Godfrey.

The pair are scheduled to meet in late March or early April, with the reward for the victor being a shot at Giacobe Fragomeni.

Italian Fragomeni, a former opponent of David Haye, claimed the vacant WBC strap with a technical decision win over Rudolf Kraj in Milan last October.

Fragomeni, though, is set to fight Krystzof Wlodarczyk before his mandatory title defence against either Hide or Godfrey.

Of course Hide will be bidding to become the first former heavyweight world champion to step down and win a title at cruiserweight.

Godfrey, who goes by the moniker Too Smooth, is 27 and has lost just one of his 19 professional bouts to date.
