Lawrie eyes 2014 captaincy

by Niamh O'Mahony , 30 January 2009

Having seen Colin Montgomerie bestowed with the honour of being European's Ryder Cup captain in 2010, fellow Scot Paul Lawrie has set his sights on the position for 2014.

The tournament will be hosted at Gleneagles on that occasion, with Spaniard Jose Maria Olazabal expected to get the nod in 2012.

"There is no question that when the Ryder Cup comes to Gleneagles in 2014, I will be looking to captain the team," Lawrie told The Daily Record.

"I will be 45 then and it would be the right time for me - but I would probably need to play in the team again before then to have a chance of getting the job.

"Playing once and then getting the captaincy is not how I would want it but if I play in Wales and in 2012 - or in either - then I think I have a realistic shout. It's all down to me.

"Being the Scottish captain of Ryder Cup team in Scotland - it doesn't get any better than that, does it? Maybe winning an Open in Scotland could be better."

Lawrie was part of the Players Committee that unanimously opted for Montgomerie and the former Open champion says he is now determined to be among the playing staff for Celtic Manor.

"I want to play for Monty because he's going to be a great captain," he went on.

"I've played in four Seve Trophy events with him as captain and he's in a different class.

"He's just so good in a team environment and in that kind of format. He's excellent in the team room and you learn a lot from him. I would very much like to play. It is my goal to get back into that team."
