Geelong dominate Collingwood

by Johnny Ward , 13 March 2009

Geelong trounced Collingwood 127 [0.18.19] 51 [1.6.6] in the NAB Cup grand final at Docklands.

The Cats dominated in midfield and took over from the second quarter onwards, though they lose defender Josh Hunt to a knee injury.

The Pies held their own early on but fell apart in the second quarter, with two goals to Steve Johnson and singles to Paul Chapman, Travis Varcoe, Joel Selwood and Gary Ablett.

At the interval, a scoreline of 64-24 suggested that The Pies had little to play for in the second period.

So it proved, with Chapman and Lonergan adding more third-quarter goals, before Dale Thomas and Ryan Gamble exchanged six-pointers.

Dane Beams' goal reduced the margin somewhat but Mathew Stokes added another six-pointer at the end of the third period.

The winners relaxed slightly early on in the fourth quarter. Gary Ablett added his second goal but that preceded Dale Thomas and Travis Cloke goals.

Geelong then finished very strongly. Ablett and Johnson complete hat-tricks, with Kane Tenace and Jimmy Bartel also getting among the goals.
