Montgomerie wants more wildcards

Colin Montgomerie wants to increase the number of wild-card picks he will have for next year's Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor.

The European Tour's players' committee meets in Ireland on May 12 with the Europe captain hoping to persuade them to follow the American model.

Last year’s American captain Paul Azinger was allowed four wild-card picks, two more than previously.

Currently Europe opts for 10 qualifiers and two wild-cards, a system that has been used since the 1995 match.

However, Montgomerie has consistently stated that he would seek more input if he were made captain, once even suggesting that he would like all twelve picks.

"I am one vote, but a more powerful one than I was being the captain," Montgomerie said. "I will put the case forward."

"It's up to the committee to debate that and to come up with a scenario. I can't at this stage say what - but you can put two-and-two together."
