European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie will choose three of the 12 players that will make up the team to play the United States at Celtic Manor in 2010.
Montgomerie pushed for a change to the system that has existed since 1995 which has seen the European team made up of ten qualifiers and two wildcards and his wish was granted when the players' committee met at Baltray on Tuesday .
"I'm leaving the meeting delighted that I have one more option," Montgomerie told reporters.
"I'm very, very confident and very happy that I got what I was looking for, which was one more option."
Paul Azinger had four picks when he captained the United States to victory at Valhalla last September and Montgomerie was keen to have a greater say in who will make up his team for the 2010 competition in Wales.
Under the new system, five of the nine players will qualify from the European money list with the other four coming from the world rankings. The 12 month qualifying period begins in September.
