Bute fight likely for Froch

Carl Froch believes a unification fight with IBF super-middleweight champion Lucien Bute could be next for him.

The Montreal-based Romanian is extremely popular in Canada and has defended his title in front of 20,000 fans.

Froch is on a quest to unify the 168lbs crown and would welcome a fight with the generally regarded number one Mikkel Kessler, but says Bute is the more likely opponent.

The Nottingham fighter says he has instructed his promoter Mick Hennessy only to look for big fights as he would not be able to get motivated for comfortable defences.

"[Promoter] Mick [Hennessy] was out in Germany talking to Kessler," Froch said on Steve Bunce's Boxing Hour. "There’s nothing definite.

"We seem to be making some ground with Bute’s people. I do not want to sit and have easy fights, I want to unify the titles.

"I’d like a fight in Nottingham for my fans, but he pulls a big crowd in Montreal. Though with the Canadian dollar the way it is, it wouldn’t mean any more money than me fighting in front of 7,000 in Nottingham.

"I’ve probably got two or three years left in my career and I want the big fights. I could have easy fights. I could have voluntary fights, but I don't want them.

"If I have to go in next with Mikkel Kessler, I’d do that.

"For me, the belts are more important than the money."

Froch would also welcome super-fights against Bernard Hopkins and Kelly Pavlik but does not see them happening in the short-term.

"The problem with Hopkins and his people, he tends to price himself of the market or he wants you to take peanuts," Froch added.

"He wants to take 80% but that’s unrealistic. If I could do it at 172lbs and for the right money, it would be worth doing.

"Kelly Pavlik is a big name and obviously a good fighter, he’s the only man other than myself to beat Jermain Taylor.

"I don’t think he’d be as strong at super-middleweight, but you never know, I didn’t think Taylor would be either."
