Haye: 'I've got to be twice as good as I've ever been'

by Oli Skehan , 21 May 2009

David Haye admits he will have to step up his performance considerably if he is to trouble Wladimir Klitschko on June 20.

The two fighters square-up at the VTL ARENA in Germany for the world heavyweight crown, a fight that can be seen LIVE on Setanta Sports 1.

"I'm just going to go out there and be the best I can be," Haye told Setanta Sports News.

"I can't focus on what he's going to do, he's always does what he does. He's a very defensive fighter. He's 6'7, he's 18st. He's a big guy. He's looks like Ivan Drago from Rocky IV. He looks the part. He shapes up the part."

However, Haye insists he has one advantage over the Ukrainian, stating: "He hasn't got the heart I've got. I've been telling people since the age of three I'm going to be the heavyweight champion of the world and here's my chance. This is it. This is the big one."

Haye is under no illusions as to the task facing him but he has a plan in place to upset the younger of the Klitschko brothers.

"His advantages are arm length and his height," Haye revealed.

"I can't afford to stand on the outside of his punches getting jabbed in the face like a lot of his opponents do. So I've got to fight a little bit more like Mike Tyson in this fight. I've got a Lennox Lewis-style with the long jab and right hand. I'm the small guy now.

"Unlike the cruiserweight fighter I had the height and reach advantage. I'm the small man in the fight. I've got to work twice as hard. I've to get twice as close. I've got to be twice as good as I've ever been."
