Stricker wins Crowne Plaza Invitational

American Steve Stricker won the $6.2 million Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial in Texas on Sunday after beating Steve Marino and South African Tim Clark in a sudden death play-off.

Stricker managed a birdie on the second extra hole to take the title, leaving Clark particularly disappointed after he seemed set to take victory.

The 33-year-old, who finished runner-up to Phil Mickelson in last year's tournament, was in control after hitting an eight-foot putt to make par at 17, but he bogeyed 18 to let Marino and Stricker back into the tournament.

Jason Day hit a one-under par 69 to finish the tournament on 16 under, one behind.

After a birdie at the first, bogeys at three and five put the pressure on Clark after missed fairways, but birdies at seven, ten and fourteen got the overnight leader back on track.

However, a wild drive put him off the fairway at 14, and though his second shot was impressive, he was unable to prevent a bogey.

Clark was lucky that Stricker missed his own birdie chance on 15 that would have brought him level, and then bogeyed 16 to go two shots behind.

However, Stricker then chipped in from off the green to go 17-under on 17 to put the pressure back on and level with Marino in second.

Clark kept his nerve on 17 with a fine eight-foot putt after hitting the bunker with his second shot, to record a par and keep his one-shot lead.

But a disastrous shot to the right into the trees on 18 meant that Clark was forced into a conservative chip back onto the fairway.

Marino, needing a birdie on the final hole to put the pressure on Clark, went slightly wide of the green with his second shot.

It meant that Clark was playing matchplay golf now, and lying 90 yards from the hole, realised that he only needed a par and two shots to make it.

His putt was twelve feet from the hole, but he left it short to leave the play-off.
