Monty wants Welsh warm-up

Colin Montgomery wants his likely Ryder Cup team to play in next year's Welsh Open as a warm-up.

Ahead of this week's Welsh Open at Celtic Manor, the European captain believes competing in the 2010 Welsh Open will give his side an advantage.

As the Ryder Cup travels to Wales for the first time in it's history, the Scot, who has played in eight Ryder Cups, is confident of a good turnout at Celtic Manor in twelve months time.

"I can't insist on anyone play tournaments but I'm sure I will get a number to say 'yes'," said the Scot, who has played in eight Ryder Cups.

"I would expect a much stronger particpation to play next year."

Meanwhile, America's Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin believes the new European selection is a step forward.

Whereas 2008 captain Nick Faldo was able to select just two players, the remaining ten selected automatically prize money, Montgomerie will have a third captain's selection.

American team captain Paul Azinger had four picks last year, as he led the home side to their first victory in nine years, and Pavin believes the Europeans saw the benefits of the US side's selection process.

"I think maybe the European Ryder Cup commitee saw some some merit in having a few more picks," he said.

"To have flexibility of more picks is always better as a captain, the more picks you have the better it is.

"I would like to have 12 picks but PGA America wouldn't go for that. It is nice to have that flexibility - I'm sure Colin's happy to have an extra pick, I'm certainly happy to have four."
