Taylor powers into last eight

by Jo Carter , 07 June 2009 Phil Taylor

Phil Taylor remained on course to win his third UK Open title with a fifth-round win over Andy Smith.

Taylor powered past Smith 9-2 to set up a quarter-final with Mark Lawrence in Bolton, who beat Colin Lloyd 9-3.

And ‘The Power’ admitted he was pleased to get the tactics right against Smith.

"It was a strange game," said Taylor. "There's a lot of distance between the games and you have to pace yourself.

"I was delighted with my finishing and I'm desperate to win this title again.”

Meanwhile Colin Osborne produced the performance of his career to beat former world champion Raymond van Barneveld 9-4.

Osborne will face outsider Jamie Caven after a 9-3 victory against Alex Roy.

In third quarter-final Kevin Painter faces Alan Tabern, who came through a 17-leg thriller to beat Wes Newton 9-8.

Ronnie Baxter continued his impressive run with a 9-4 win over Mark Walsh to set up a quarter-final clash with Terry Jenkins, who narrowly beat Mark Webster 9-7.
