Cotto-Clottey preview

by Ciaran Baynes , 13 June 2009

For Miguel Cotto it is about pride. For Joshua Clottey, respect. Who will come out on top tonight live on Setanta Sports 2 at 2am.

Cotto goes into his WBO welterweight title defence on the eve of the Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York's Madison Square Garden the massive favourite.

However with his defeat against Antonio Margarito still relatively fresh in the memory he will be going all out to show his heart against an opponent every bit as tough, albeit without the Mexican's unrelenting pressure.

As for the Ghanaian fighter, who weighed in right on the 147lbs limit - a pound heavier than Cotto - he believes victory on Saturday night in the sport's most famous venue will give him the respect he feels has been a long time coming.

"America they respect their people, the Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, but they don't respect those who come from far, the Europeans, or the Africans," Clottey told setanta.com.

"That guy [Joe] Calzaghe they never respected until the end.

"Even when I won the IBF title and defended it, it didn't come. This fight is very big, it's going to bring a lot of attention. If I win by the grace of God, things will be better."

Clottey believes this will be his last chance to earn big money in boxing and has been shutting himself away from any distractions to ensure his preparations are perfect.

"I keep away from people before the fight because I don't want to add to the pressure," Clottey added.

"If I lose it will be very hard to come up again. I don't want to do that. If I win this I will get the big fights."

A sensational fight could well be in prospect. Cotto will certainly have to answer some of the questions posed by the Margarito loss to win, but despite Clottey's determination and iron will the Puerto Rican's superior skillset should just see him to victory.

Watch all the action, also including Ivan Calderon's junior flyweight defence against Rodel Mayol, live with Andy Kerr and Steve Bunce from 2am. Send in your favourite world welterweight title fights from down the years to give the guys in the studio something else to talk about before the big fight.
