Bob Torrance has admitted that he would not be surprised at all if Pádraig Harrington won the US Open.
Speaking on Setanta Ireland's TheHub, Harrington's coach revealed that the three-time major winner has the undoubted ability to tame the notoriously challenging Black course at Bethpage State Park.
The reigning Open and US PGA champion missed his fifth cut of the year on US soil at the St Jude Classic and is struggling with most aspects of his game facing into the second major of the year.
However, Torrance is confident the Dubliner can add the US Open to his haul of majors.
"He could bounce back this week," Torrance remarked.
"It wouldn't surprise me if he won it [the US Open].
"One of Pádraig's strongest points is upstairs, he's a very good thinker.
"I've always said to Pádraig, if you're playing well, it's easy to think well. If you're not playing well it's not so easy to think well."
In recent times Harrington has zoned in on trying to perfect his swing as it widely acknowledged he had one of the best short games in the world.
Torrance has worked with Harrington for some time in pursuit of perfection and the veteran coach believes that a good drive is key to good golf.
"If you're driving the ball poorly your short game has to be 150 percent," Torrance went on.
"If you're driving the ball well it makes an incredible difference on these tough golf courses.
"I think the drive is the most important shot in golf. If you can hit a drive 320 yards it must make the game a lot easier. You'll never make golf easy that's for sure. It's the most difficult game man ever invented."
