Walsh nears return

by Michelle Fortune , 16 June 2009

Ruby Walsh has yet to set a date for his return to the saddle despite being freed from an ankle cast on Monday.

Walsh has been on the sidelines with a fractured left ankle since taking a tumble from the fatally injured Imperial Hills in a handicap hurdle at Killarney on May 10.

He visited specialist Bill Quinlan in Dublin on Monday and had the plaster removed, but it is unclear when he will return to the saddle as he will have to get clearance from Turf Club doctors before being allowed to resume race-riding.

"Ruby got the plaster off but I have no idea yet when he will be back in action," Walsh's sister and agent Jennifer reported.

Walsh will be assessed on Thursday and it is hoped that he will be given the all clear to ride David Nicholson Mare's Hurdle winner Quevega in the Grand Course de Haies d'Auteuil on Sunday.

"Willie [Mullins] is away at the moment and Ruby goes to Ascot to represent him with Sesenta in the Ascot Stakes. He'll see how he feels after that," Walsh told the Irish Independent.
