Jean Pascal has bounced back from his defeat to Carl Froch six months ago by winning the WBC light heavyweight title.
Pascal outpointed fellow Quebec-based fighter Adrian Diaconu 116-111, 116-112 and 115-112 to take the title.
Like his battle with Froch, this was another punishing encounter, but one that this time ended with the Canadian having his arm raised.
Diaconu held the WBC title after his victory over Chris Henry gave him the interim crown and then full champion Dawson was stripped of his title for not facing the Romanian.
Pascal dropped Diaconu in the fifth round but had to survive nervy moments near the end of the bout when he was rocked by a right hand.
Interestingly this leaves a situation where a super middleweight champion, Froch, holds a win over a light heavyweight titlist, Pascal, while probably the best 175lbs fighter, Chad Dawson, has beaten cruiserweight king Tomas Adamek.
