Rain continues at US Open

by Arthur Sullivan , 21 June 2009

Hardly any of the US Open third round was played on Saturday after torrential rain once again pounded Bethpage Black.

Most of Thursday was washed out, and the downpours continued to wreak havoc as play for day three was stopped at 19:11 local time (00:11 BST) with 39 of the 60 players out on the course.

American Ricky Barnes is still leading by one stroke after his 65 in round two left him on eight under.

He will take his advantage into Sunday with Lucas Glover second and a host of players within six shots of the lead including 2003 Masters champion Mike Weir, Peter Hanson, Lee Westwood and Sean O'Hair.

Former Open champion David Duval, whose fortunes dramatically plummeted after his 2001 victory, is three-under. It is a remarkable performance from the former world number one, who has made only a handful of cuts in recent seasons.

None of the leading players managed to get out for round three. Of those players who did, England's Oliver Wilson is one-under through four, Phil Mickelson is one-under after one and Retief Goosen and Stephen Ames are level through five and three respectively.

Tiger Woods' 69 in round two was enough to see him make the cut but he will need to come from eleven behind to win as he lies at three over.

Irishmen Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell are still in with fighting chances, with McDowell at one over and McIlroy one further back.

Play will resume at 07:30 ET (12:30 BST) on Sunday. However, light rain is forecast and a Monday finish looks increasingly likely.
