O'Mahony: Preparation the key

by Julie Anne Sheridan , 22 June 2009

John O’Mahony is a great believer in ‘preparation is key’ to winning any game and that was one thing the Mayo manager concentrated on in the build-up to Saturday’s rout of Roscommon.

“We came prepared for a battle today and it’s very seldom there are one-sided games between us,” O’Mahony said after watching his side triumph by 20 clear points.

“We had it in the late 70s with Roscommon and this one today, but it’s very seldom otherwise.”

The Mayo men always looked too strong for Roscommon, scoring three goals in the first half alone.

Man of the match Aidan Kilcoyne, Pat Harte (penalty) and Aidan O’Shea all goaled in the first 23 minutes of the game.

“What we were trying to do was to get our game right. We were getting stick in the league for not being able to score at all in the first 20 minutes of the game so we’ve solved that problem," O'Mahony mused.

“We took the early chances and got the cushion, and they missed a couple of chances down at our end. But we can’t be too complacent. There are a lot of things we need to work on and we won’t get a game like that in the Connaught final,” he added.

Mayo will meet the winners of Galway and Sligo in the provincial decider on July 19.
