Kennelly close to AFL return

by GAA Staff , 02 November 2009

Tadhg Kennelly is edging closer to agreeing a return Aussie Rules side Sydney Swans.

Kennelly spent nine years with the AFL club, becoming the first Irishman to win the Premiership in 2005, but he returned to Ireland earlier this year in the hope of winning an All-Ireland SFC medal with his beloved Kerry.

He fulfilled his ambition in September when he was a member of the team that defeated Munster rivals in the final at Croke Park and he was rewarded for his efforts with an All-Star.

Despite his previous statements that he would remain in Ireland next year, the 28-year-old is believed to be leaning towards a return to the AFL, news which will delight Sydney Swans coach Paul Roos.

Kennelly is due to travel to Ireland later this month to promote his autobiography "Unfinished Business" and whilst there he will hold talks with the AFL club regarding a full-time return to the sport.

The loss of Kennelly would further weaken Jack O'Connor's panel for 2010 with Tommy Walsh due to leave for Melbourne side St Kilda in the coming weeks and David Moran hopeful of joining his team-mate in Australia.
