McIntyre wields the axe

by GAA Staff , 27 November 2009

Galway hurling boss John McIntyre has made several changes to his squad for 2010 with nine players dropped and a number of players making their return.

McIntyre is aware that the Tribesmen need to close the gap on Kilkenny and Tipperary and hopes the changes will help that happen, but he insists that the door is not closed on anyone.

With David Tierney and Damien McClearn both opting out of the panel, McIntyre has dropped Fergal Healy and Alan Kerins, while Ger Mahon, Martin Ryan, Brian Costello and Eoin Forde do not feature in the 2010 panel.

Tony Og Regan has earned a recall with Conor Dervan set to be available for selection from the end of January after completing his 48-week ban.

Long-term injury worry David Collins is fit again and has been included as have Ciaran O'Donovan and Iarla Tannian.

"The squad is open at both ends and as we showed this year, team management will be quite flexible in moving players in and out, as the need arises," McIntyre told the Irish Star.

"Management and players met recently and we all agreed that we needed to bridge the gap between ourselves and the likes of Kilkenny and Tipperary.
