Punish the deliberate yellow card!

by Brian Little , 08 April 2009

Rafael Marquez deserves to be punished for deliberately picking up a yellow card to see out a suspension in Barcelona's second leg against Bayern Munich with the tie already won.

I thought the referee Howard Webb would have been aware of this. He was just a little too obvious and I would expect the referees to look at it very closely.

We can't let these little things, well it's quite a big thing, occur as it was too deliberate - Marquez simply refused to take a free kick until he was booked for time-wasting.

When Steve Bennett came out publicly and said we know players are doing this all the time he was slaughtered for it.

In this particular situation, it cannot be overlooked and it needs to be looked at. I don't think he should get away with it.

The thing that amazes me is Bayern didn't seem to have a game-plan. If they did, nobody read the script.

You can't let Lionel Messi and Thierry Henry do what they were doing. Mark van Bommel was out there hammering his team-mates when he should probably be looking at himself in the mirror first of all because he was playing very poorly.

They decided to sit back but you've got to stop Messi and Henry at source. If you don't, they take advantage.

Bayern's tactics were all wrong. You might have to sacrifice a player and go man for man on Messi to give yourself a chance of winning.

I thought before the game Barcelona had potentially the best front three in the competition in Henry, Messi and Samuel Eto'o and they've done nothing to dampen my belief on that.
