The new Albert at Anfield

by Dan Roan , 07 November 2008

Here at Setanta we're looking forward to our next live Premier League game as well as our first FA Cup game, as our regular Saturday evening match is Liverpool versus West Brom.

I had the opportunity to go up to Melwood this week to interview Albert Riera.

The Spaniard has made a fantastic start to his Anfield career with many now saying perhaps he is the most significant signing since Fernando Torres.

Liverpool have always had a tradition of left wingers in the past from Peter Thompson through to Steve Heighway, John Barnes and Steve McManaman but, in recent years, that tradition has been discontinued.

You could say a lot of players have tried and failed to make that position their own on the left under Rafa Benitez - the likes of Harry Kewell, John Arne Riise, Jermaine Pennant, Ryan Babel, Antonio Nunez, Mark Gonzalez. The list goes on and on.

It's a little bit like the art of leg-spin in cricket. Out-and-out left wingers are a dying breed generally. England have been searching for years to find one and no-one has properly grasped it.

So it's died a death in recent years and what makes Riera's arrival so exciting is he's brought back the art of wing-play to Anfield.

I saw Steve Heighway, who works at Liverpool in a scouting capacity now, and he's thrilled at the emergence of Riera and thinks he's potentially the best left-sided winger the club have had since Barnes.

In terms of history, the Albert name is significant as Albert Stubbins was a legendary player in the forties and fifties. He brought the title to Anfield in 1946/47 in his first year after a move from Newcastle and also, like Riera, chose Liverpool over Everton who tried to lure him to Goodison.

There are parallels with him and Riera knows about Stubbins. I was impressed and surprised - foreign players, and the Spanish ones in particular, seem keen and enthusiastic about integrating and immersing themselves in the local football culture.

They don't bury their heads in the sand. He knew Stubbins was the only player to appear on the Sgt Peppers' album cover and had such iconic status.

He knew all about this, which I was amazed about, and I got him the CD as a memento.

The Kop have started singing the old Albert song reserved for Stubbins in honour of Riera so he's doing something right.

He said he's enjoying life at Anfield. He had the spell at Manchester City in the 2005/06 season and only scored once and it wasn't a particularly promising first stint in English football.

He's come back a much better player after playing in the Uefa Cup final and in Spain and is now quicker, bigger, stronger and much more developed as an all-rounded player.

Riera is loving life on Anfield as part of the Spanish collective with Torres, Alonso, Arbeloa, Reina, the manager and his coaching staff. He is happy he helped them win against Manchester United, he scored against Wigan and played well in the win at Chelsea.

He seems to have established himself ahead of Babel, Benayoun and Pennant and, although when he arrived perhaps not many fans were excited about the prospect, he has quickly been established as one of the undroppables. He's an ever-present in the big games and there's only a few players who are guaranteed to be in the first-choice XI.

There's no doubt he'll be an important player for Liverpool if they are to bring the title home after all these years and will play a crucial role.

Riera was one of the most engaging and interesting foreign players I have had the chance to meet with his knowledge of Liverpool, the past and the club's heritage and now he's part of that.

See the interview in our build-up to Liverpool v West Brom on Saturday.
