Platinum One deal always a non-starter

by Felix Healy , 16 September 2008

After Platinum One announced that they were not going ahead with the proposal to create an All-Ireland league, I have to admit that it doesn’t shock me.

I’m not surprised given what has happened with Arkaga [Cork City owners]. From what I can gather, they went into Cork understanding that there was going to be an All-Ireland league.

Once it was established that that wasn’t going to be the case, Arkaga basically pulled the plug. End of story.

The problem with the All-Ireland league is that the clubs will like it. But whether that is the answer to all of the ills is another story.

I’m not too sure where they [Platinum One] were getting all of the prize money from. It is an enormous investment and I don’t know whether they were going to get it.

But I have to say, the clubs would be for an All-Ireland league, but the associations are not going to vote themselves out of business. It is as simple as that.
