Increased attendance figures somewhat skewed

It is bad news for racing fans that the eagerly-awaited clash at Royal Ascot of Overdose and Far Eastern champion sprinter Sacred Kingdom will not take place.

Royal Ascot have been trying to develop this concept of the global sprint challenge - making both of their sprints Group Ones - and this is a big blow for them.

It's also a major blow for Haydock - he'll miss the Temple Stakes as well on Saturday and we may not see the Hungarian superstar in Britain at all this year.

The problem is not too serious - it just means that the horse has not had sufficient preparation to get him to Royal Ascot.

Meanwhile, the news that average attendances in British racing is up five per cent is good news and people will wonder then why is racing naval-gazing and wondering whether to rebrand itself.

But if you peel away some of the gloss, you'll see that attendances at certain racecourses on average are down and attendances that are recorded up at others are only due to side attractions, for example, that have been put on for the day.

This skewed the figures at some racecourses. They realise that an awful lot of people going once a year and the difference it would make to gates would be enormous if you could just get those people to go twice.
