Cesc will rise to the occasion

Wenger has chosen Fabregas as his new captain

It’s been a bizarre week for Arsenal. There’s nothing wrong with having a go at players or pointing the finger at players but it should be done behind closed doors, so Arsene Wenger had to act on William Gallas' remarks.

It looked as though maybe it was a move to get away from Gallas. Wenger will tell him he has to apologise to the players because players lose respect off other players very quickly.

Gallas has made a mistake, footballers do that. He has to apologise and then what Wenger does in January is another matter.

You’re always going to have troubled times and sticky periods – every club gets it. But it’s important you stick together because you’re all in the same boat so you don’t want people jumping off at the wrong time.

In this situation Arsene was going through a sticky period but it was upto the players to sort it out between them. As much as Arsene is a good manager, it’s upto the players to perform every week. Maybe Gallas was right somewhere along the line but you don’t say it publicly, you sort it out in the dressing room.

We used to have punch-ups in training but nobody ever heard about it because it was sorted out that day.

Gallas was stripped him of the armband and that was right at the time. Looking through the team, there’s not really a lot of candidates for the captaincy so I think it has gone to the right man in Cesc Fabregas.

But he is still a young man and has a lot on his shoulders. He’s the playmaker in midfield and now he’s the skipper, but he was the only man for the job.

He’ll be different to people like Tony Adams and Patrick Vieira. The players respect him and he’s an excellent player but maybe he’s got to be a bit more vocal on the pitch. He’s been used to people telling him what to do but as skipper he has to demand things of people.

Even though he’s only a young man he’s got a lot of experience, he’s played in that team for a long time now so I’m sure he will rise to the occasion of being skipper.
