All hail Tony 'Skywalker' Mowbray

by Robin Hackett , 12 December 2008

In a game where supporters increasingly seem to resemble the stars of My Super Sweet 16, it’s nice to see Tony Mowbray getting the support of both the fans and players despite steering the team to almost certain doom.

"My position is not something I have even considered or thought about,” he said this week.

“I just get on with my job every day. I work with the team and generally enjoy watching my team play.

"The feedback is the players enjoy coming into training and I haven't felt the stadium having negative thoughts at all.”

That was backed up by Jonathan Greening: “Tony Mowbray is a top guy, a top coach and any club would want him, the style of football he plays, his passion for the game - and he would be under no pressure because he is probably a wanted guy."

Now four points adrift of 17th-placed Newcastle, without a win since the first weekend of October and with Ishmael Miller now ruled out for the season, it’s fair to say that neither the supporters nor Greening have much reason to believe they’ll survive.

Mowbray recently said that his team had shown ‘fighting qualities’ in their last two games, and it’s nice to see him giving his all to save them, but everyone knows Tony is a lover not a fighter. And it’s brilliant.

Three teams go down every year and West Brom were always likely to be one of them, so they may as well go down entertaining us all with some nice passing football.

A few weeks ago, Tony came face to face with his former Championship mucker Tony Pulis at Stoke. Mowbray lost the battle of the Tonys: his team lost 1-0 as The Potters stuck with their more realistic approach towards survival.

But, as Pulis and his team of giants loomed over him, metaphorically saying things like “Give yourself to the Dark Side, Tony – your thoughts betray you” and “You don’t know the power of the Dark Side”, Mowbray responded like the middle-aged Yorkshire equivalent of Luke Skywalker.

"You may describe Stoke a physical side,” he said. "Sometimes that makes for a less enjoyable football match, less of a spectacle.

"But there you go, all that matters in the eyes of some is the result.

"You know my philosophy. My view is that I like to entertain the supporters who come and pay their hard-earned money and I thought that was very difficult to do here.

"I don't want to be harsh, but I thought it was a pretty dross game of football.”

The Force is strong with him. Let’s not spoil it by getting him sacked when they go down.
