Burton could still blow it

by Steve Bower , 17 February 2009

If Burton throw it away it would be remarkable because the transition from Nigel Clough leaving to Roy McFarland taking over has been pretty smooth.

However, in our live game at Ebbsfleet last Thursday they were 1-0 down when the snow came down and the match was abandoned. They were getting outplayed and it was the first real time we’d seen a chink in their armour.

One of the form teams in the Blue Square Premier are Wrexham. Dean Saunders has only lost one game since he went there as manager. You would expect them to get a play-off place but if they get a win at Burton on Thursday and then win their games in hand, they might feel that the leaders can be caught.

It’s unlikely but we’ve seen it many times in all divisions in football – just go back all those years to when Manchester United caught Newcastle.

Anyone who can put some consistency together will get into those play-offs because it’s getting really competitive. Wrexham are in there with games in hands, Torquay got back to winning ways at the weekend, Histon are of course going so well too.

Then you’ve got the likes of Crawley around there. Even down to the likes of 10th or 11th you wouldn’t rule out a play-off place – the likes of Rushden and Diamonds.

Oxford were unfortunate to have five points deducted but they are bang in form too. I wouldn’t rule them out for the play-offs and, as we’ve seen before, a team in form in there often ends up winning them.
