I think if former boss Nigel Clough had stayed at the club Burton would have been champions weeks ago. He left them 16 points clear at the top, but that was a big upheaval when he left for Derby and they suffered something of a nervy stutter.
They had broken the conference record for number of consecutive wins and they hadn’t lost at home all season, by the law of averages they were always going to have a wobble at some stage.
Torquay and Cambridge put runs together, but when it mattered most they couldn’t turn up the pressure. Torquay beat Burton but then couldn’t beat Crawley at the weekend, and Burton were beaten by Crawley two weeks ago but on the same day Cambridge lost to Forest Green.
They were pivotal moments. It was always an outside chance that Burton could be caught, but when the leaders have slipped up – the chasers haven’t capitalised.
Now you would think it’s only a matter of time before Burton clinch the championship.
How will they do in League Two? That’s an interesting question. If Nigel Clough was still manager I would be saying ‘no problem’. He knows the players inside out, he has great contacts in the game – if they’d gone up with Clough there would have been no problem.
Add to that the performances of non-league sides in the FA Cup, it’s becoming less and less of a shock when non-league sides put out Football League clubs and that is due to the standard of The Blue Square Premier.
Exeter went up via the play-offs last season, now they’re just outside the automatic promotion spots in League Two.
I don’t think Burton will have any problems, but if Clough had still been at the club I would have been tipping them to do what Exeter have done and challenge for further promotion.
The facilities at Burton are excellent, but does caretaker boss Roy McFarland want the job on a full-time basis? Will they be able to hold on to players? A lot the players stayed last summer because of Nigel Clough.
The future will be interesting for Burton, but it will definitely be one that is spent in League Two.
