Setting the Khan record straight

by Steve Bunce , 09 April 2009

People shouldn't be outraged about Amir Khan getting a title shot with Andreas Kotelnik.

Boxing is a modern business and I know people give us stick on this show, but boxing isn't like a straightforward business.

The best doesn't ever have to fight the best, unless there is enough money on the table. It's not the Champions League. It's not the Twenty20 World Cup, it's not Wimbledon. It's not the 100 metres Olympic final.

Boxing is a different business - it moves, shakes and groans in different ways.

Every single lightweight in the world has a promoter or a manager who could get on a train and make a fight with Kotelnik. John Murray or Junior Witter could've fought this guy.

It's a case of going out and doing the deals. It's why sometimes promoters are called deal-makers. Frank Warren and Don King are deal-makers and Mick Hennessy has done deals in the past.

It's what boxing is about, going and getting the best deal for your fighter and making the most amounts of money.

Some people are saying Khan is serious in our interview (see the clip) where he calls Kotelnik the worst world champion - have a look at his face and you tell me if he is serious in this clip.

It was tongue-in-cheek.
