The future for Ricky

by Steve Bunce , 07 May 2009

Arguably one of the biggest questions is whether he should, not whether he will fight again.

It was a bit like Joe [Calzaghe] after the Roy Jones fight. But nothing compared to this.

Afterwards I spoke to a lot of the 24,000 who were out there and not one fan I spoke to, whether they were from Dublin, Edinburgh, South London or wherever, wanted to see him fight again.

The only person I’ve heard say he should fight again is Oscar De La Hoya.

There’s not an avalanche of people saying ‘Ricky should fight again', quite the reverse.

I went out there predicting that Ricky would win on points but when I got there and heard what was going on in the camp, I couldn’t see a way Hatton could win.

The catalogue of incidents that will come out are extraordinary. The fact that Floyd came in during round seven of sparring a few weeks before the fight.

On the night he showed up when Ricky was getting his bandages done. There was chaos.

On the Thursday, Floyd said: “Just because there’s been problems in the camp doesn’t mean it’s been a bad camp.”

There was a class of egos, Lee Beard doesn’t have an ego, Floyd has an ego bigger than Las Vegas.

I personally don’t want to see Ricky Hatton fight again. It’s quite simple. He can’t fight at that level anymore and I don’t want him to lose to anyone who is not an all-time great.

Do I think he will fight again? Yes.
