Hiddink will manage Chelsea again

by Tony Cuddihy , 31 May 2009

The most significant piece of news regarding the Chelsea manager's position was not that coming from Milan on Sunday, of Carlo Ancelotti leaving his post as manager.

No, of far more import was the revelation that Guus Hiddink would in fact be staying on the Stamford Bridge payroll in the guise of a Technical Advisor.

The role itself is purely nominal, of course, with 'Technical Advisor' being a couple of rungs down on the ambiguity ladder from 'Director of Football' or 'Coaching Liaison Officer' or 'Motivation Injection Engineer'.

In other words, it's a buzz term to mark the fact that Hiddink will, one day, return to the manager's hotseat at Chelsea. Why else would they keep him in the picture?

Kudos to the man for sticking to his promise to return full-time to the Russian national team, but once the World Cup is over in the summer of 2010, and assuming Roman Abramovich is still owner of the Premier League club, expect cuddly Uncle Guus to be hightailing it back to London.

And where does that leave Ancelotti? Another interim appointment, to these eyes, albeit on a longer timeline than that enjoyed by Hiddink.

The Italian certainly has a big enough reputation to deal with the egos in the Chelsea dressing room, having won two Champions League trophies in his time with Milan, as well as the Serie A title (though the last league success came in 2004).

Having presided over a superannuated Milan dressing room, over veterans such as Maldini, Nesta, Beckham, Seedorf and Inzaghi, he will find a similar situation at Chelsea with Messrs Ballack, Lampard, Anelka, Drogba, Deco, Carvalho and Shevchenko (if he returns with his former manager) all the wrong side of 30.

His is an ability to get the most from players who have seemingly passed their best, but the Premier League is a different beast to the more sedate playing fields of Serie A. While Ancelotti may re-energise those old bones for one more attack on Manchester United's crown, I'd put my money on a Hiddink revolution as soon as the World Cup is over.
