Don't underestimate Chagaev

by Ciaran Baynes , 08 June 2009

I have read a lot over the last few days suggesting that Wladimir Klitschko-Ruslan Chagaev is certain to be a dull one-sided fight in the Ukrainian's favour - I totally disagree.

To compare him to Sultan Ibragimov, who spent 12 rounds unable to get inside Klitschko's jab in a terrible contest, as many American pundits have done does Chagaev a massive disservice.

That was HBO's judgement, as they are not going to show the June 20 IBF/WBO heavyweight title defence now - something which should have given Team Hayemaker better bargaining power over future negotiations with Bernd Bonte.

In my view Chagaev more than any heavyweight out there, has the combination of skills and toughness to beat the younger Klitschko (except perhaps his brother).

As well as the skillset of a man who held a world championship victory over the legendary Felix Savon, Chagaev has beaten the one fighter who would prepare you best for fighting Wladimir Klitschko.

Though Nikolay Valuev's jab doesn't have the potency of Klitschko, his reach is even longer. If you watching their first contest the way Chagaev parries the 7ft giant's jab with his right hand and comes back with his own right-left combination, he showed the blueprint to beat Klitschko.

Watching the looping left hand Chagaev throws from a square stance I can't help but think back to another southpaw, Corrie Sanders, who knocked out Wladimir six-and-a-half years ago.

Chagaev doesn't hit as hard as Sanders but is more skillful and has the tools  necessary to land this blow more frequently, especially against the modern safety-first incarnation of Wladimir.

Though he is undoubtedly a better fighter and harder puncher than Valuev, Klitschko also has a weaker chin and if Chagaev lands with the blows he caught the Russian with, Klitschko is likely to be in trouble.

Whether Chagaev has the stamina to outbox Klitschko consistently over 12 rounds is in doubt. With the few fights he has had over the last two years and injury problems (both points which could now be made about Haye) you cannot be certain that he will have the physical capabilities to beat Klitschko.

If he is at the top of his game though, and he looked in decent shape at the weigh-in before his bout with Valuev, do not be surprised if Chagaev upsets the Klitschko hegemony of the heavyweight division.
