At the end of the day, Scotland were outclassed in their 3-0 defeat to Holland.
We knew Holland were a better side than Scotland. We haven’t really got the players to match them.
You’ve got to do it for 90 minutes not 30 and, unfortunately, Scotland only did it for 30. For the other 60, Holland controlled the ball.
But referee Laurent Duhamel has a lot to answer for.
What I don’t understand is how a guy who’s been demoted in his own country gets to referee a World Cup qualifier of great magnitude for both Scotland and Holland.
We should have picked up Robin van Persie for the second goal just before half-time – it’s as simple as that.
But, technically, the referee played too much time at the end of the first half, so he shouldn’t have allowed the corner to come in.
And the decision to disallow Gary Caldwell’s header 15 minutes from time was massive.
That’s not an excuse for the fact that we didn’t get anything from the game, but it was 2-0 at the time and, at 2-1, we might just have had a sniff. That would have given us half a chance.
At one goal down, you stick a ball in the box and somebody gets on the end of it and all of a sudden you’re coming away with a point.
I thought it was a great header from Caldwell. I didn’t see much going on in the box – I don’t know what the referee saw.
He was very quick to get on his whistle as well and didn’t let Scotland back into the game.
Regardless, I don’t think we were embarrassed on Saturday. We thought before the game it could be 2-0 or 3-0 and maybe even 4-0, but we couldn’t afford for it to be 5-0, 6-0 or even worse.
Maybe that’s why George Burley didn’t put any extra strikers on. It was damage limitation.
It’s not a disaster. It’s pretty much what we expected and it’s now up to George to pick the right team against Iceland.
That’s where we’d expect to get the three points.
I would imagine George will look to make some changes. He needs to be positive – the crowd will be looking for three points and something to cheer about.
Unfortunately for him, nothing else will suffice.
