United are top but they aren't nearly the team of the season

by Ian Crocker , 20 January 2009

The teams of the season so far have been Aston Villa, Everton and Wigan in my opinion, despite none of them having generous numbers in their squads.

Martin O'Neill hardly uses a sub it seems. I'm sure he will be keen to bring in some extra quality because although they're keeping Arsenal out of the top four The Gunners won't be going away - they may not be hitting their usual heights but they're unbeaten in eight matches. Say no more.

David Moyes' bench is usually full of kids and of course he's barely had any strikers available. It really is some achievement for Everton to be where they are just now.

Steve Bruce has done a superb job at Wigan. He's unearthed some outstanding signings and he's going to have to do more of the same when they move on. He could be in contention for the Newcastle job again one day - I hope so because I think he deserves a crack at it having turned it down while at Birmingham.

Nobody's feeling too safe from Wigan downwards. I do not think Spurs, Blackburn and Manchester City are in serious danger of relegation. I worry a little more for the North East trio Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough.

I'm not too sure about Portsmouth either but so much depends on how clubs bolster their squad this month. Bolton's spirit could count for lots too. If anything, they should be hard to beat and they  have an absolutely top-class goalkeeper. So do Fulham, who've been brilliant defensively (until last Sunday at West Ham!). And talking of West Ham, a few weeks ago they looked in big bother. How quickly things can change.

It would be a shame if the three promoted sides ended up in most peril but that is looking likely. Unsurprisingly they've each just invested in strikers and it remains to be seen how Manucho, Fortune and Beattie will fare. Beattie should be the pick of three but who knows? All signings are a gamble.

So five clubs are in the hunt for the title or a top four place. Everton are being Everton. And there are just the 14 clubs seeking survival. The real intrigue is yet to come!

It sure is a fascinating Premier League season and it's no great surprise to see Manchester United sitting on top of the table. Fergie must have been splitting his sides at Rafa's rant, which was quite extraordinary. If you're going to take on Fergie, you have to go to Stoke next day and win I'm afraid!

Liverpool and Chelsea seem a little too capable of shooting themselves in the foot and you don't want to do that when United are around - they've been there, seen it, done it, got the t-shirts and the books and the DVDs. I'm sure it will remain an intriguing title race but at the moment it's hard to see past United retaining their crown.
