Hughton, we have a problem!

by Les Ferdinand , 21 March 2009

Chris Hughton's a proud man and he'd like to get it right, but it's not about him at the moment - it's about what's right for Newcastle United and he'll know.

I've worked with Chrissy Hughton before and he worked for a long time with the defenders at Tottenham. He's a good coach but obviously he's struggling to get his point across here.

I think they're going to wait until Joe Kinnear comes back. Hopefully he'll be okay to come back.

But they really need immediate action and they need to bring someone in as soon as possible, but if you've offered someone the job and said Joe can come back, how are you going to do that?

They've got to find three wins at least from their final eight games. The teams in and around them, Stoke, Portsmouth and Middlesbrough - those are the games you're looking at, but Stoke are going to bombard them and will they be able to cope?

Michael Owen's not fully fit. This was Obafemi Martins's fourth game back and he looked like he was struggling for any real fitness. When you've had players out of the side for so long, it gives you a boost when they come back, but they need to be fit and firing.

Speaking to the physio earlier on Saturday, it doesn't seem like Viduka or Barton will be back any time soon either.

Every year, or every couple of years, you see a big side go out of the division and this time it looks like it could be Newcastle's turn which is a shame because it's a great place, a great stadium - this team deserves to play in the Premier League.

It would be horrendous if both Newcastle and Middlesbrough dropped out of the Premier League. These people live for their football, it's the icing on the cake for them on a Saturday.

For both of these sides not to be in the Premier League next season, it would be a travesty.
