Capello not happy with right side

by Steve McManaman , 06 June 2009

It was very professional. The first 30 minutes it wasn’t very good while they adjusted to the pitch. The flight of the ball perhaps deceived them at times, but they got the job done and that’s all that matters.

I think if we had Croatia or Ukraine on Wednesday and had an even bigger game to come, the tempo might have been quicker but, because we’ve got Andorra and we’ll beat them anyway, I think that was why the second half was such a stroll. We may as well conserve energy for Wednesday and stroll through that as well.

The really difficult games, the Croatias and you could even argue the Belaruses, we were excellent and got the job done. Tonight we didn’t need to be excellent and still got the job done.

I think we’ll have a mixed bag right through until we qualify. Sometimes you need to be excellent, we weren’t today.

Even in the second half when there were acres of space we were still giving the ball away. Everybody was having a touch and it was bouncing five yards off them. It was not a great performance.

Capello made the change at half-time because he wanted to stir things up. He wanted to show that he wasn’t happy with the right side. Theo Walcott was a little bit invisible and Glen Johnson made mistakes.

England didn’t necessarily step it up after the change, though. If anything Kazakhstan just got weaker.

Steve McManaman was speaking as part of Setanta Sports' live coverage of England versus Kazakhstan.
