Boro need to stand up and be counted

It’s great to see the academy kids coming through at Middlesbrough but they’re not going to keep you in the division.

They’re also not going to get them promoted next season.

You need to bed them in a few at a time alongside some good, experienced professionals – that’s what Gareth Southgate lacks.

Tuncay and Gary O’Neil are an exception, the rest of them need to stand up to be counted.

I think they’ve been poor all season and his signings have been poor as well.

If you’re going to bring the kids in and look for an example to lead from you don’t look to someone like Afonso Alves. Mido’s the same. Southgate needs to find some experience.

Downing had a bit of a spell around some of the internationals too, but as with O'Neil it hasn't been enough.
If we can keep Tuncay he should be tied to a three year with non-promotion clause for the third year - Wheater and the local boys should be held on to and Southgate SHOULD BE OUT RIGHT NOW signing decent Championship players with experience of missing out on promotion and a hunger for promotion.

I'm not sure how Gary O'Neil merits being bracketed with Tuncay. O'Neil went missing mentally if not physically when a move to Pompey was at the forefront of his mind and has only really played well at the end of the season. Too little too late.
