Andrei Arshavin scored four times at Liverpool on Tuesday night but still failed to end up on the winning side.
The Arsenal attacker stunned Anfield with his finishing prowess but Yossi Benayoun's late leveller rescued a point for Rafa Benitez's Reds.
Can you think of any other instances where players have deserved to be on the winning side but not seen their efforts matched by their team-mates?
If so, please drop us a line using the feedback form below. We have conjured up a few ideas here in the office so it will be interesting to see if they match up with yours!
1. Andrei Arshavin - nominated by Setanta
The January import displayed his class on Merseyside with four goals from his four shots to dent Liverpool's title bid. His incredible goal burst should have been enough to earn all three points for Arsenal but the hosts showed their mettle to keep bouncing back to earn a 4-4 draw.
2. Ronaldo - nominated by Alan H
The Brazilian is one of few opposing players to be afforded a standing ovation when being substituted at Old Trafford. Real Madrid lost the game that allegedly caused Roman Abramovich to fall in love with football 4-3 after David Beckham's dramatic introduction as a Manchester United substitute. Ronaldo scored a hat-trick and had the last laugh as Real progressed in the Champions League on aggregate.
3. Shay Given - nominated by SheaLFC
The brilliant Irish keeper knew his time at Newcastle was up when he performed heroics in the home fixture with Liverpool over the festive period and still ended up losing 5-1. Given had been used to this sort of treatment before and lost his rag, unusually, as his defence crumbled in front of him. A move to Manchester City soon followed.
4. Michael Owen - nominated by TomLFC
The England wonder-kid was a revelation in the 1998 World Cup tie with Argentina. After scoring the sort of goal you only dream of, he ran the South Americans ragged but ended up being on the losing side when, predictable, The Three Lions bowed out on penalties.
5. Lionel Messi - nominated by Mudu
The brilliant Argentinian scored a delightful hat-trick for Barcelona against Real Madrid but was still not on the winning side. El Clasico ended 3-3 with Barca down to 10 men last year with Messi having the final say with a last-gasp equaliser. There are some who would argue Messi deserves to be on the winning side every time he plays because he really is that good.
6. Roque Santa Cruz - nominated by Stu
The Paraguay international wants out of Blackburn Rovers but there is no denying his class. Neverthless, he must have been hugely frustrated when claiming a hat-trick against Wigan Athletic and yet still ended up losing 5-3. The match in December 2007 also saw Marcus Bent bag a treble so there was a fight over the matchball.
7. Afonso Alves - nominated by Roly
In snowy conditions at The Riverside, Middlesbrough stunned Manchester United their expensive Brazilian import finally showing his class. The South American striker bagged a well-taken double but United hit back to force a 2-2 draw in an entertaining game on Teesside last term.
8. Denis Law - nominated by Benny C
A clever answer this one. 'The Law Man' hit six goals for Manchester City in a fourth round FA Cup tie in 1961 against Luton Town. However, the game was abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch with City 6-1 up. The Scotland striker netted again in the re-match but his side went out 3-1 on the night.
9. Dwight Yorke - nominated by Ned
The Aston Villa striker provided proof that he was destined for big things with an eye-catching display up at Newcastle United in 1996. It was a superb achievement against one of the top sides in the country but he will have been disappointed on the trip back to the Midlands. Newcastle won a thriller 4-3 and he even had a potential equaliser ruled out for offside.
10. Henrik Larsson – nominated by Mick
Two headed goals right out of the Larsson copybook twice dragged Celtic back into the game in the 2003 Uefa Cup final against Porto. Five minutes of extra time remained when the Portuguese side struck for the third and decisive time to deny Larsson the taste of European success with Celtic.
11. Christian Vieri – nominated by Shahed
The burly striker scored four goals for Atletico Madrid at Salamanca back in 1998, but STILL ended up losing 5-4!
