Munster have confirmed that the ERC has been in touch with the province and have requested paperwork on Wian du Preez's registration.
The ERC are looking at the short-term deal du Preez inkjed with Munster. The South African player was signed by the Irish side due to regular loose-head prop Marcus Horan being unavailable because of illness.
He played in four Heineken Cup pool matches and two Magners League games between December 5 and January 22 before returning to his homeland to line out for the Cheetahs.
The Munster news comes as Welsh side the Ospreys could potentially be expelled from the Heineken Cup after another South African, Ricky Januarie, failed to stay with them for the full tenure of the minimum three-month contract he inked.
The scrum-half returned to South Africa to play for the Stormers after just over two months contravening European Rugby Cup Ltd rules.
However, there has been no confirmation from the EFC that Munster are under investigation after they stated: "At this stage, it is not appropriate to comment on any investigation that may or may not be taking place."
Either way, Munster remain confident that they have no case to answer.
