Pompey must make case for Cup winnings

by JP Lonergan , 08 March 2010

The latest excerpt from the daily Portsmouth drama sees the club having to make a special representation to the Football Association in order to be paid their FA Cup winnings.

Two goals from Frederic Piquionne saw Pompey earn a 2-0 win over Birmingham City on Saturday to book their place in the semi-finals of the competition, having already eliminated Coventry City, Sunderland and local foes Southampton.

Saturday's win earned STG607,500 for Portsmouth, but - as they are in administration - they have to seek approval from the FA to keep Cup winnings if it is determined that they have met all their obligations to competitive clubs.

If not the money could be withheld as Pompey still owe creditors, the debt of the club continuing to dominate even more south coast headlines than their Cup exploits of their hopeless position at the foot of the Premier League.

They must now to write to the FA and make a representation to the Professional Game Board, who will ascertain if it is appropriate for Avram Grant's side to collect their outside Cup income.
