Fergie: Rooney can match Ron haul

by Dave Maher , 14 March 2010

Wayne Rooney is in a strong position to match the 42-goal total that Cristiano Ronaldo managed for Manchester United two seasons ago, according to Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ronaldo's 2008-09 haul was extraordinary, especially in the context of modern football, and Ferguson previously played down Rooney's chances of equalling or bettering it this campaign.

However, the on-fire former Everton striker moved up to 32 in all competitions for the season after netting twice in a 3-0 win over Fulham on Sunday, prompting Ferguson to reconsider his stance.

"I said a while ago it's impossible for a player to get 42 but he is on 32 and there is a challenge there for him," said the United boss.

"He is capable of scoring in the next eight league games and five possible European games, so he has 13 possible games and you never know, I wouldn't put it beyond him. I was just glad he got to the 30 mark, but we are enjoying his goal-scoring."

Dimitar Berbatov added a third to Rooney's double with time running out, to ensure United returned to the top of the Premier League standings.

The Red Devils lead Chelsea, who have a game in hand, by two points.

"You have to think about goal difference," said the Scot. "We are only four goals ahead of Chelsea, I wish it was 14 to be honest, but at least it is in our advantage."
