Sunderland-born Adam Johnson curled home a brilliant late leveller for Manchester City against his home town club, as both clubs left the Stadium of Light with a 1-1 draw.
Johnson turned down a January move to Steve Bruce's side in January in order to join City, and came off the bench to fire over a crowded penalty area and into the top corner of Craig Gordon's net with the clock counting down.
Kenwyne Jones got Sunderland off to the perfect start on nine minutes when he powerfully headed home a cross by Steed Malbranque.
Fraizer Campbell had the perfect chance to double his side's lead in the 26th minute but he blasted a left foot effort wide of Shay Given's goal.
Five minutes later, City had their best chance of the half. Shaun Wright-Phillips and Carlos Tevez made nuisances of themselves inside the penalty area and the ball ran to Gareth Barry, whose shot just evaded the Sunderland goal.
Johnson arrived as a second half substitute for Wright-Phillips and played a key role as City pressed for an equaliser. Craig Bellamy was twice denied by Gordon in the last ten minutes but, just as it seemed Sunderland would hold on for their second win this week, Johnson curled home his sublime effort from the corner of the penalty area.
