Pompey ace backed for World Cup spot

David James has been backed by Portsmouth boss Avram Grant to go to the World Cup as England's number one goalkeeper.

The 39-year-old veteran custodian has slipped behind West Ham's Robert Green in the pecking order due to his injury problems this season, while Joe Hart, Scott Carson and Chris Kirkland are also vying for a place in Three Lions coach Fabio Capello's plans.

However, following James' recent run of games for Pompey, Grant is confident his experience will see him go to South Africa as the first choice.

"I have a feeling that when we come to the World Cup he will be the first-choice goalkeeper," said Grant.

"He has experience, understanding of football and also passion for the game. When you have that knowledge it is good and you have to use it.

"For me he is number one - but I am not the coach of England.

"However, there is still a lot of time for things to change. I think they will.

"I don't think what has happened here will be a problem for him.

"I don't think Fabio Capello will be thinking about the administrator when he decides who is his choice for England's goalkeeper."
