Boss backs Swedish star

Bolton manager Owen Coyle is vowing to stick by Johan Elmander despite the Swede's lack of goals since his club record move to Bolton for £8.2m in 2008.

Elmander scored for only the tenth time in the team's colours during Saturday's 4-0 win over Wigan and Coyle is now convinced he can win around his doubters.

Trotters' fans have made their feelings known about the Swedish international at times since his arrival at the Reebok Stadium, but his recent performances suggest he is currently playing with a renewed confidence under the former Burnley boss.

Coyle said: "I would love Johan Elmander to be scoring every week and all strikers are judged on goals.

"But I know what he brings to my team and how I want to play.

"The first thing I ask of my players is 'How hard are they going to work for me?'.

"We're not at a level where we can have any luxury players. We need players totally committed and who come off the pitch not being able to give any more.

"I've shown the trust I have in him because I play him every week ahead of good players like Ivan Klasnic and Riga.

"I know what he brings to the team and so do his team-mates. He has such an appetite and zest for hard work.

"He's had his critics because he's not scored as many goals as people would like, but I know what he brings to my team and that's why he plays."

Elmander is once again expected to lead the frontline with Kevin Davies as Bolton travel to Everton on Saturday.
